For Halloween this year we transformed our front yard into the 1980 Miracle on Ice Olympic hockey game between USA and USSR by combining skeletons, traditional Halloween characters, and a plethora of hockey gear.
See Making a Miracle on Ice Halloween Display for a behind the scenes look at what went into creating this display.
2020 marks the fourth year of our spooktacular Halloween display featuring skeletons playing hockey on our front yard. In the three prior years we featured the Megalodons (inspired by our hometown favorites the San Jose Sharks) facing off against their NHL division rivals the Kings, the Ducks and the Golden Knights.
As you know, 2020 has been anything but typical. Hockey was no exception. The Stanley Cup playoffs were still going on in August and September when I was planning my 2020 display. The Sharks were not in the playoffs. The 2020-2021 NHL season was not even a blip on the horizon. Therefore, instead creating an NHL-themed display this year, I decided to go in another direction.
2020 is the 40-year anniversary of the USA vs USSR Miracle on Ice Olympic hockey game that ended with Sportscaster Al Michaels iconic call, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” Given the state of the world in 2020, I figured this was a good year to remind people to believe in miracles. That is how I decided to feature the Miracle on Ice hockey game in our 2020 Halloween display.
